My Writing Assessment

My study in this class has covered a wide range of writing-related topics, including academic summaries, the distinction between quoting and paraphrasing, rhetorical appeals, rhetorical features and options, audience engagement, and the 10 on 1 technique. We also had Learning Outcomes that we had lessons about to help ourselves when writing.

Recognize the role of language in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and be open to communicating across different languages and cultures. In my narrating and literacy essay I talk about speech problems that I dealt with that were oppressing and empowering. In the first paragraph i stated “We were in the supermarket, and she put me in a trolley, and some primary school kids overheard me talking to my mom, and they gathered around me, and she said I was so excited to talk to them and that they were enjoying hearing me talk, probably because my accent was different from what they were used to” , as a empowering moment for me. While i stated “When I was 11 I came over to america, and i started 7th grade it was a kind of hard to speak with my accent as most people would say that they wouldn’t understand what i was saying or that i wasn’t speaking properly” on page 2, in paragraph 3, which was an oppressing moment for me.

Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.  The goal of a rhetorical analysis is to explain the effect a piece of writing or oratory has on its audience, how successful it is, and the devices and appeals it uses to achieve its goals. I use the text “The Tent” by Margaret Atwood(2006) pages 143-146 to analyze using the rhetorical appeal pathos to appeal to one’s emotions. She also uses many rhetorical devices like hyperbole, irony, metaphor, personification, and simile. I like the irony in the text the author describes of the main character speaking about the many dangers  and how they want to keep their loved ones and themselves safe while also not knowing what is outside of the tent they inhabit.

Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing. I usually like to write down whatever I think about in a run-on sentence and go back to it later and read it out loud to see if it makes sense. I usually don’t revise my work after i finish with that process, i’m like one draft is my final draft. I do usually use feedback that I have received from teachers because I like that they have my back with helping me how to write and also with helping me bring out my potential with every writing piece.

Which brings in the next outcome being to engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes. My professor has been kind enough to write out a list of things i needed to fix in my research essay some of which included: Avoid gerunds as subjects (often creates fragment/confusion),Always know your verbs and subjects to avoid fragments, run ons(which i struggle with sometimes), or comma splices,Contextualize sources with any of the source use strategies we discussed in class My reference list is nearly perfect, but I forgot My in-text citations for whenever I quote or paraphrase and Alphabetizing source list. It seems like alot of mistakes but I expect them because I’m not a perfect writer and I thank my professor for letting me know about them so I can correct them.

Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias. In my Research Essay I have been recommended sites from various teachers and librarians like pubmed, or google scholarly. They have helped me with citing various amounts of texts and articles needed to complete my essay, I also cannot just forget google in general.

Compose texts that integrate your stance (i.e. you thesis) with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation. In my research essay I talk about my stance on informed consent and how It is something that is all around us and deals with a lot of things that affect our daily lives. I also name many different reasons on why you should have a choice of whether you want to be informed as it is within your right.

With how the semester has gone by, I want to thank my professor for helping me improve my writing and helping me grow as a writer while going through different readings and texts during the class. It was nice to have a moment to write on the thoughts we had during the discussion post or in the mini  journals that were provided to us to use and help us learn about our Individual writing. While also letting us give feedback on each other’s work so we can grow as a class and a community.
